Before you can sit your practical driving test, you must pass the DVSA theory test. It's a two-part exam that tests your knowledge of the Highway Code and your ability to spot hazards. Here's exactly how to book it, what to expect, and how to prepare.

What You Need Before Booking

You must have a valid UK provisional driving licence (photocard) before you can book your theory test. If you don't have one yet, apply at gov.uk — it costs £34 and takes around a week to arrive.

!

You cannot book your theory test without a provisional licence number. Make sure it arrives before you try to book.

How to Book — Step by Step

01

Go to the official booking site

Visit gov.uk/book-theory-test — this is the only official site. Avoid third-party booking sites that charge extra fees.

02

Create or sign in to your account

You'll need a GOV.UK One Login account. Create one with your email address and a password.

03

Enter your provisional licence details

Enter your driving licence number exactly as it appears on your photocard. Double-check it — errors will prevent you from booking.

04

Choose your test centre

Select a test centre near you. In Greater Manchester there are centres in Manchester City Centre, Stockport, Bolton, Oldham, and Wigan.

05

Pick a date and time

Slots are available Monday–Saturday. You can book up to 3 months in advance. Weekday morning slots tend to be quietest.

06

Pay the fee

The theory test costs £23. Pay by debit or credit card. You'll receive a confirmation email immediately.

The Two Parts of the Theory Test

Part 1 — Multiple Choice

  • 50 questions from the DVSA question bank
  • 57 minutes to complete
  • Pass mark: 43 out of 50
  • Topics: Highway Code, road signs, safety, vehicle handling, environmental issues
  • You can flag questions and return to them

Part 2 — Hazard Perception

  • 14 video clips of real driving situations
  • 1 clip contains 2 developing hazards, 13 clips contain 1
  • Click when you spot a developing hazard
  • Pass mark: 44 out of 75
  • Click at the right moment — too early or a pattern of clicks scores zero
✓

You must pass both parts in the same sitting to receive your theory test pass certificate. The certificate is valid for 2 years — you must pass your practical test within that window.

Top Tips to Pass First Time

  • Use the official DVSA revision app — it costs £4.99 and includes the full question bank with explanations for every answer.
  • Don't just memorise answers — understand the reasons behind them. The Highway Code is the key reference.
  • Practice hazard perception daily — watch real driving videos on YouTube and practise clicking on developing hazards.
  • Book when you're ready, not to a deadline — rushing leads to failure. Most learners need 4–8 weeks of consistent study.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early — you'll need to check in and store your belongings. You cannot bring your phone into the test room.

What Happens on Test Day

Arrive at the test centre with your provisional licence photocard — this is the only valid ID accepted. You'll be shown to a computer terminal and given a practice session before the real test begins. The whole thing takes around 90 minutes.

Results are given immediately on screen at the end. If you pass, you'll also receive a confirmation email. If you don't pass, you must wait at least 3 working days before booking again.
